COMMITTED TO HELPING DEVELOP A CULTURE OF STEM PARENTS MUST
BECOME A HIGH PRIORITY TO BENEFIT THEIR CAREER-READY STUDENTS
LAUNCH OF THE STEM PARENTS NETWORK (SPN) DEVELOPED IN 2012 BY PROFESSOR MICHAEL BATIE AS THE BEGINNING OF THE PARENT-CENTRIC STUDENT STEM MOVEMENT COMING TO FRUITION
STEM PARENTS NETWORK (SPN) is a community platform that connects active STEM parents, students in grade K-12 with each other and teachers, tutors, mentors and STEM professionals across the nation for networking, training and access to digital resource tools.
Parents inspire and help one another when they are connected. The current fragmentation of organized silos limits the growth and scale of a national parental community specifically for STEM.
SPN - STEM PARENT NETWORK addresses the problem of disconnected parental networks by providing them with a convenient connected community that serves them and their children needs. This community will first receive training through our “Empowered Math Parent Program” and our Hands-On Science Program designed specifically for parents. These programs must be completed before free membership to the network is granted.
Members of the STEM Parent Network will share, discover and collaborate on projects, assignments, tutoring and mentoring with STEM Professionals to support parent involvement with their child’s education process.

DEVELOPING A CULTURE OF STEM PARENTS MUST BECOME A HIGH PRIORITY

“In recent years, STEM education - the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics - has become a national priority.”
The Roots of STEM Success Report 2018
Free Network:
We will offer parents monthly opportunities to learn, teach and share new areas of the STEM field. These will be open to all members. These events will be sponsored by STEM companies to develop strong partnerships with our network. Evidence is all around us - homeschools, charter schools, public, private, independent and faith based schools all offer some sort of STEM curriculum at school to grades K-12.
Monthly Meetings:
The STEM Parent Network will meet monthly to discuss updates and research in the field of STEM. Meetings are being created by companies and non profits who work in the STEM fields. We are creating partnerships with professional STEM membership organizations so that mentorship opportunities can be created for students who would like to have the opportunity of a career in this field.
Workshops and Seminars:
We offer four master workshops for parents to establish membership with the network. “Empowered Math Parent” and “Hands-On Science”. Parents must attend these classes before obtaining a free membership from the Network. “The pipeline leading students toward careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) begins leaking in high school, when students choose not to take advanced mathematics and science courses”- EDweek article stated in 2012. Our workshops and seminars will assist our parents and families in becoming better parent teachers at home assisting their children to navigate their learning more effectively.
Annual Conference:
What is STEM? It is commonly defined as preparing students to be competent and skilled in the four disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. “A successful STEM Education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy and is an essential part of 21st century teaching and learning”, so states a study in 2012 conducted by the University of Wisconsin - Madison. The issue is more worrying for children of color trying to enter the STEM undergraduate programs. Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) a non profit in its vision states that it advocates for college and career readiness in the STEM field for minorities. We will partner with companies and non profits that wish to empower our parents, families, students and communities with greater information in the STEM field once a year at our annual conference.
Online Information:
This is a priority for our work. We will create an online presence with a website, www.stemparentnetwork.org and a social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, You Tube Channel and our own Blog. Developing an App specifically designed for parents and STEM students will be under construction in 2021.
We look forward to welcoming all our parents, families and their children to our STEM Parent Network.
